Last night the Fairmont Firebirds Men's Soccer team traveled to Ralph Wade Stadium to take on the
Springboro Panthers. There’s a mounting mystique about the northwest corner of the pitch that may
soon require it to be named “The Bird Nest” because in two of their last three wins at Springboro, the Birds’ 2023 and 2026 winning goals came from that corner.

The Birds looked dangerous from the opening whistle with Owen Graf dribbling through the Panther midfield in the fifth minute and forcing a double save by the Panthers’ keeper. Fairmont overwhelmed Springboro with its aggressive attack through the middle of the pitch with Gavin Weaver, Freddy Irakoze, Trey Shaka, Azariyah Nsabimana, and Aaron Black. The defensive troop of Luke Davidson, Henry Pachin, Noah Baumgarten, Jaxen Overfield, and Teddy Combs squelched any hope of the Panthers scoring, and their discipline on the offside trap saw three Panther goals erased from the scoreboard. The Panthers’ attack was so scarce that the Boro student section was relegated to shouting chants at the referees instead of their usually lively banter at their opponent.

Mordecai Kesner came on in the fifteenth minute and made an instant impact, dribbling at the Panther backline and forcing several saves from the host’s keeper. Fairmont had a good look in
the eighteenth minute when Irakoze backheeled a pass to Ned Bruzzese, but the midfielder sent his shot just past the left post. Despite Fairmont’s possession domination and 8-1 advantage on corners, the teams went into halftime scoreless.

The heat and pace of the first half seemed to drain the players’ energy in the second half, but Fairmont had the better of the chances. Baumgarten and Black pulled their shots just wide of the left post in the forty-seventh and forty-eighth minutes. In the sixty-eighth minute, Graf was taken down just outside the top right corner of the penalty area. Weaver’s subsequent curling effort around the wall headed toward the top right corner but the Panther keeper made a superb save to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes later, Weaver forced another save by the keeper and it looked like the game was headed for a tie as the clock ticked down to the final minute. But, in a last-minute attack the Birds earned a corner kick from that northwest corner flag with ten seconds left in the game. Weaver hurriedly sent the ball into the box where Black rose above the crowd and headed the ball past the keeper for the victory. Pandemonium ensued in the Birds' Nest corner.

The victory takes Fairmont’s record to 5-0-2 and they’ll look to notch their sixth win in a row this
